Glover family

The Glovers are a family that appeared in Emmerdale from 1994 until 2000. They consisted of patriarch Ned, his wife Jan, and their three children, David, Linda and Roy.

Storylines[]

Ned, Jan, Dave, Linda and Roy Glover arrived in Emmerdale in August 1994, moving their caravan onto Emmerdale Farm land following their eviction from their previous farm. Jack Sugden offered Ned and Dave work on the farm and eventually agreed that the family could move into Annie's Cottage, which had recently been vacated by his Mother, rent free so the Glover's could get back on their feet. Linda began working for Zoe Tate at the Vets, whilst Jan took a job behind the bar at The Woolpack, and also looked after baby Victoria Sugden during the day.

In 1995, Linda began dating Daniel Weir. Things seemed to be going well, however, Linda was heartbroken when she discovered that Daniel was already engaged and ended the relationship. Several weeks later, Linda discovered that she was pregnant. Too ashamed to tell her parents, Linda self-aborted with drugs that she'd stollen from the vets surgery. Ned and Jan were both horrified and heartbroken when they discovered what Linda had done, and Linda herself struggled to come to terms with her actions. With the support of new boyfriend, Biff Fowler, Linda began to work through her problems, however, the loss of the baby was always there.

The Glover's experienced near constant money worries, and things seemed to get worse once they took over the lease at Holdgate Farm. The family quickly fell behind with the rent, and events like Linda's 18th birthday certainly did nothing to help ease the financial burden. In order to give Linda a nice birthday present, Jan bought a locket from Eric Pollard, but quickly got into debt as she attempted to pay it back. Desperate to keep her head above water, Jan ended up stealing money from The Woolpack till. She was eventually caught and sacked. Jan was left deeply embarrassed following the incident, and Ned was concerned when she refused to leave the house. In order to get Jan out and about again, Ned set her up on the family's stall, selling veg in a lay-by. Being in the rural setting helped Jan, however, things went wrong when the stall was robbed by a group of youths, leaving Jan shaken.

Meanwhile, David had relationship problems of his own when he cheated on girlfriend, Kathy Bates, with Kim Tate, the wife of his boss, Frank. Frank eventually found out about the affair and Kim and Dave set up home together in the village. However, Kim, who had recently discovered that she was pregnant, was tempted back to Frank when he offered her £1million to end things with Dave and move back in to Home Farm. Dave was heartbroken by Kim's decision, but refused to give up on his belief that the child she was carrying was his. In September 1996, Kim gave birth to baby James, but Frank banned Dave from coming anywhere near the hospital. Upset, Dave turned to Kathy, and the pair got back together. Dave and Kathy married in November 1996, but Dave was unable to let go of his feelings for Kim. On Christmas Eve, after Biff and Linda's wedding, Dave and Kim planned to leave Emmerdale with James, however, they were prevented from leaving when a fire broke out at Home Farm. Dave was able to save baby James but became trapped. He later died from his injuries, leaving his family devastated. In the aftermath of Dave's death, Frank decided to get a DNA test done in order to find out once and for all who James' father was. He arranged a blood test that proved that he was James’ father. Jan in particular struggled to accept the news, and refused to believe that James wasn't her grandson. In fact, Kim herself refused to accept the truth, and offered Jan a job as housekeeper at Home Farm so she could be closer to James.

Following their Christmas wedding, Biff and Linda looked to the future, with Linda keen to start a family. However, Biff had recently received news from his mother that his father was dying from Huntington's disease, and Biff himself had a 50% of inheriting the condition. Biff was devastated by the revelation, but refused to share the news with Linda, who was happily planning to fall pregnant. Following his father's death, Biff finally plucked up the courage to tell Linda the truth, however, she had a bombshell of her own: she was pregnant. Linda was heartbroken by the situation, especially when Biff insisted that she would have to consider a termination. Eventually, Biff had tests done to see if he had inherited the disease, and there was relief all round when he tested negative. Sadly, heartbreak was just around the corner when Linda miscarried.

In October 1997, the family were invited to Home Farm for Kim and Steve Marchant's engagement party. Linda was excited about going to a fancy party and splashed out on a new dress for the occasion, but Biff was furious when he realised how much she'd spent and the pair rowed. During the party, Linda attracted the attentions of Lord Oakwell and, still annoyed with Biff following their earlier argument, accepted his invitation to dance. Linda enjoyed Alex's company and, upon seeing that he had the keys to Steve's Porsche, suggested they go for a drive, unaware that Alex was under the influence of cocaine. Whilst driving along the country lanes, Alex offered the drugs to a horrified Linda, who demanded he stop the car. As the pair fought, Alex lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. After coming round, Alex moved an unconscious Linda into the driving seat before running off. Linda was rushed to hospital, however, doctors revealed to her devastated family that there was nothing they could do, and Linda died a short time after being admitted.

Linda's death hit the family hard, especially coming less than a year after Dave's death. As Alex had gone on the run a short time after the crash, much of the family's anger was directed towards his wife, Tara, with Ned even going as far as to release her horses and set fire to her stables. Jan in particular struggled to cope, and took over Linda's old job at the vets. However, Zoe was forced to sack Jan after only a few days as her constant mistakes were starting to impact the business. Jan's struggles came to a head over Christmas 1997, when baby James was abducted from his cot. As the village searched, Ned and Roy realised that nobody had heard from Jan for a while, and reluctantly theorised that she could have taken James. Their instincts proved correct, and they tracked Jan and James down to a derelict maternity unit, where Jan had given birth to Dave. Jan was found in a confused state, not only believing that it was 1977, but that James was Dave. James was reunited with his Mother, whilst Jan was arrested and eventually admitted to a psychiatric ward to recover.

Jan was discharged several weeks later, but found it very difficult to settle back into village life, feeling like everyone was talking about her and judging what she'd done. Even the press were sniffing around, and Ned eventually agreed to be interviewed by journalist, Helen Akroyd, hoping to set the record straight once and for all. However, Ned was not pleased with how the article turned out, and Jan was furious when she realised what Ned had done. Although it was clear that many in the village distrusted Jan, she did have the support of former daughter in law, Kathy, who asked Jan if she would collect her niece, Alice, from school one day. Jan was delighted to be trusted with Alice and quickly accepted, but Ned didn't think it was a good idea. Ned was proven right when Viv Windsor saw Jan leading Alice away from the school gates and, believing that Jan was abducting the child, intervened and told the assembled parents who Jan was. Things got worse for Jan when Kim took out an injunction against her, and she received no support from Ned when she attempted to make Kim reconsider. Hurt, Jan left the village to live with her sister. Ned and Roy visited Jan some days later and tried to convince her to return, but she insisted that her marriage was over.

As Ned and Roy got used to life without Jan, baby James was never far from their minds, and Roy began visiting the child when he was hospitalised during the Summer of 1998. Ned was angry when he found out what Roy had been doing and insisted that James was nothing to do with them. However, Roy pointed out that Frank had had the means of achieving whatever result he wanted where James' paternity was concerned and suggested, that with Frank now dead, they carry out their own test, especially as Kim had always maintained that Dave was James' father. After some persuading, Ned and Kim agreed to the DNA test and Kim was left heartbroken when Frank was found to be James' father, her last link to Dave gone. As Ned and Roy attempted to put that particular chapter behind them, they were dealt a blow when they received word that they were to be evicted. Despite initially looking at new homes together, Roy told his Father that he felt it was time for him to leave home, and he moved into Annie's Cottage with Marlon Dingle, Will Cairns and Biff. Meanwhile, Ned took up residence with the Sugden's, but quickly found himself getting on everyone's nerves with his down-beat attitude!

In January 1999, whilst accompanying Jack's wife, Sarah, to the supermarket, Ned bumped into his old flame, Dawn Wilkins. The pair were pleased to be reunited, however, Ned was disappointed to learn that Dawn was days away from moving to Ibiza to open a bar. Dawn suggested that Ned to go with her but he insisted that the idea was impractical, angering Sarah, who told him to stop feeling sorry for himself and suggested it was time he moved out. The following day, Ned packed up his belongings but realised he was missing an old teddy bear that had belonged to Linda. Sarah revealed that Robert and Andy had taken some toys to the toy fair at Christmas and so Ned went to check with Rev Ashley Thomas. Ashley told Ned that Eric Pollard had had some toys valued by a collector and Ned was soon on his way to an auction, hoping to track down the bear. He arrived just as the auction was getting underway, and was stunned when the bear sold for £13,000. With the money in his pocket, and with a little help from Roy and Biff, Ned headed to the airport and left with Dawn to begin his new life in Ibiza.

As Roy got used to life without his family around, he got together with Kelly Windsor, an old school friend he'd dated briefly as a teenager. The relationship moved quickly and Roy and Kelly were engaged within weeks, however, Roy was unaware that Kelly had recently slept with her step-brother, Scott. When Kelly refused to call off the engagement, Scott told Roy that he and Kelly had slept together. Roy was heartbroken by the revelation and confided in barmaid, Tricia Stokes, who was able to put Roy's mind at rest, telling him that Scott couldn't have slept with Kelly as she knew he'd been experiencing erectile disfunction for months. A relieved Roy was amused by Tricia's story and, satisfied that Kelly hadn't cheated on him, the wedding was back on. Unfortunately, the wedding plans hit another bump in the road when Ned returned to the village, determined to put a stop to proceedings, believing that Roy was making a mistake by marrying Kelly. Ultimately, though, Ned couldn't bare to fall out with his last remaining child and gave Roy and Kelly his blessing. Ned stayed to attend the wedding before returning to Ibiza.

Roy and Kelly started married life living with Kelly's family, however, the cramped conditions were far from ideal, and the couple soon began looking for their own place. Following the recent death of her Father, Vic, Kelly had been given a share of his insurance money, which would help the new couple in their search, however, unbeknownst to Kelly, Viv had given the money to Scott to help him set up his new business. Whilst Viv panicked, Scott theorised that it would take time for Roy and Kelly to find a suitable property, giving him time to replace the money. Unfortunately for Scott, a cottage came up for sale in the village soon after, and once their offer was accepted, Roy and Kelly approached Viv for the money. Kelly was furious when she discovered that the money was gone and was left even more angry when the cottage was sold to business woman, Ms Curtis as a holiday home. Still desperate to find their own place to live, Roy and Kelly offered to clean the cottage and Kelly soon suggested to a reluctant Roy that they move into the cottage whilst it was empty during the week. Things came to a head when Kelly, fed up of being seen as unsuccessful, held a dinner party at the cottage for newlyweds, Mandy and Paddy. When Kelly accidentally smashed a vase, and Roy realised that she was wearing some of Ms Curtis' jewellery, a row broke out, causing Kelly to storm home. Later that evening, Ms Curtis arrived unexpectedly and called the police when she realised that someone had been in her house. With no signs of a forced entry and with Roy and Kelly the only other people with keys, the police were pointed firmly in their direction and Roy was arrested when he decided to take the blame for stealing the jewellery. Although everyone was sure that Roy would merely be cautioned, the judge wanted to make an example of him, and sentenced Roy to 28 days in prison.

Kelly was left devastated by Roy's imprisonment and turned to Scott for support. The pair ended up sleeping together again and some weeks later, just after Roy had been released, Kelly discovered she was pregnant. With no way of knowing who the Father was, Kelly kept the news to herself but the guilt of cheating on Roy and the strength of her feelings for Scott soon became too much and she took an overdose. Although she lost the baby, Kelly survived the ordeal and checked into a private mental health hospital, funded by Chris Tate. Knowing that the only way she would recover would be to come clean, Kelly told Roy that she'd slept with Scott and then made plans to leave the village for London, with Chris once again providing financial support. However, Roy decided to look past what Kelly had done and the pair decided to give their marriage another go.

Looking to the future, Kelly and Roy rented Pear Tree Cottage from Chris, but Kelly soon grew tired of her rather modest lifestyle. With this in mind, Kelly was delighted when Roy revealed that Ned had been in touch, offering them the chance to move to Ibiza to work in his and Dawn's bar. Kelly jumped at the chance and soon she and Roy were making plans to leave. However, at the airport, Roy became annoyed when Kelly began talking about how quickly they could ditch Ned and take the bar for themselves. Realising that Kelly would never lose her selfish streak, Roy told Kelly that their marriage was over before boarding the plane alone.
